Dear candidate for Westfield council,
With election day coming up soon, the answers to the following questions would be helpful to voters. Please take a few minutes to answer these three questions:
The first question regards speeding on our streets. In particular, Boulevard and Summit Ave. are used as bypasses for Central Ave. The vast majority of cars whiz past the electronic speed monitor signs at high speed, even when nearby schools are in session. Traffic increases due to projected overdevelopment of our town will only exacerbate this situation. Westfield police attend to other pressing issues such as car thefts. One simple solution implemented in many cities is the installation of speed cameras followed by a fine sent to the offender. Will you commit to this approach?
The second question regards sidewalk safety. Many of our sidewalks are tilted and broken, causing trips and falls. Their poor condition force people to walk and push strollers in the streets around the parked cars and alongside moving cars. A recent Leader letter mentioned a Westfield town ordinance requiring homeowners to maintain their sidewalks. Will you commit to the strict enforcement of this ordinance?
The third question regards the noise of gas-powered leaf blowers and mowers. Their unbearable noise as well as the unchecked pollution generated are higher than that of cars, according to multiple studies. Similarly to leaders in other towns in New Jersey as well as in other states, can you commit to banning these gas-powered lawn tools?
We, the voters, appreciate your taking the time to answer these 3 questions, and look forward to reading your responses.
